Let's face it, quality hunting clothing isn't cheap, but it's usually worth the money for the high-performance in waterproofing, breathability, durability and even anti-microbial features.
After a hunting trip, when you go to wash your (hopefully bloody and dirty) outerwear, it's critical to take proper care of them to make sure their features and functionality last.
Below are the DOS and DON'TS from our experience for how to wash your high-performance hunting clothes to maintain their original performance.
DON'T:
Don't use regular laundry detergent or fabric softeners. It can be detrimental to the quality and functionality of the specialized fabrics. Most high-performance outdoor gear is designed with advanced materials such as waterproof membranes, durable water repellents, and breathable fabrics. Standard laundry detergents often contain harsh chemicals and additives that can compromise these technical features. The detergent residue can clog the pores of breathable membranes, diminishing their ability to wick away moisture. Additionally, the detergent may strip away the water-repellent coatings, leaving the outerwear vulnerable to water saturation. And of course they can leave a fragrance that may deter animals.
DO:
Do use specialized cleaners like Nikwax. Nikwax has developed easy-to-use, highly effective and long-lasting after-care treatments for all weatherproof fabrics. The treatments contain elastic water-repellent polymers that bond to fabric fibres, leaving the spaces between open and breathable. They stretch and move with the fabric so they work better and last longer.
Nikwax will not change the look or feel of the fabric, it will just protect and prolong its useable life. The treatments are water-based, environmentally safe and non-flammable. Ideal for all types of outdoor equipment and accessories. Nikwax recommends a two-step treatment process that cleans and then re-proofs to restore the original performance of the manufacturer's clothing.
DON'T:
Don't wash your clothes in hot water or on a regular cleaning cycle.
DO:
Do wash your clothes in warm or tap cold water on the delicate cycle.
DON'T:
Don't use dryer sheets – or dry your clothes on a regular cycle with high heat.
DO:
Do use wool dryer balls – and dry on the delicate cycle on low heat. They soften clothing, fluff down clothing and reduce static without any chemicals. Plus, they last for 1,000+ loads and you can use them for all your laundry to completely replace dryer sheets.
